Laurie & Nikki: Breast Friends Forever

We are so excited to be walking in our second Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure in 2010 in Dallas. We experienced our first 60 miles in 2008. This blog was originally created to document that year’s journey from the first moments when we made the commitment to raise $2,200 each (it’s now $2,300 in 2010), to starting and completing our 24 weeks of training, hosting fundraisers, and our thoughts and memories about the actual event. It was an incredible experience. We had a team of six that year, and raised more than $20,000 for Susan G. Komen. We amazed ourselves with what we were able to accomplish.

This year we are a team of two, and are returning refreshed and ready to give it our all. We are prepared to be inspired by our fellow walkers and we look forward to sharing our experiences as second-time walkers. If you have any questions or need any help with training questions, fundraising ideas, or anything else — feel free to e-mail me.

We’ve started fresh with the blog due to an accidental deletion of our archives on my part. I am disappointed to have lost the great ideas and memories from our past, but we are confident we will build new ones. I had posted a few duplicate posts to my personal blog, so I will be able to share those. We hope you enjoy our blog and our 3-Day journey.

Laurie lives in Frisco, Texas with her husband and Chihuahua, Brownie. The 2010 Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure is her second 60-mile walk supporting the cause. She is walking in memory of her husband’s mother, Arveta, who died of the disease in 1996 at the age of 48. Laurie also participates in several Race for the Cure events each year, and volunteered at Race Headquarters in Plano in 2009. In both 2008 and 2010, Laurie has been a volunteer Training Walk Leader. She looks forward to a world without breast cancer, and hopes that her efforts help fund the cure that so many women are desperately waiting for. She walks with the belief that her nieces and future generations will see a cure to breast cancer in their lifetimes.
Nikki lives in Plano, Texas, has two beautiful children, and is a recent newlywed. She walks because there is history of the disease in her family and she does not want to see this impact the lives of those she loves. She walks in memory of her Grandmother. This is also her second time participating in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure, and she looks forward to the challenges and rewards that will come with walking 60 Miles for this worthwhile cause. Nikki participated in the 2009 Dallas Race for the Cure with a team of her co-workers and friends and cannot wait for this year’s event.
